How to Plan an EV Road Trip

A long EV journey is a series of short stops, not one big refuelling event. The practical method is: drive between 10% and 80% state of charge, stop for 15–25 minutes roughly every 200–300 km, and pick every stop so that a second charger is within a few kilometres. Do that and range anxiety largely disappears — what remains is a scheduling problem, not a technical one.

Why 10–80% is the rule

DC charging speed falls as the battery fills. Most cars charge fastest between roughly 10% and 50%, still quickly to 80%, and then slow dramatically. Charging the last 20% can take as long as the first 60%.

So on a journey, two 20-minute stops beat one 45-minute stop, even though the total energy is the same. Arriving at a charger with 10–15% left and leaving at 80% is the sweet spot. See what kW means for the underlying numbers.

Before you set off

  1. Charge to 100% overnight before departure — this is the one time full charge makes sense, because you are leaving immediately and the first leg is free of stops.
  2. Plan stops around things you would do anyway — food, coffee, toilets. A charge that overlaps a meal costs you nothing in time.
  3. Check connector and power at each planned stop, not just that "there is a charger".
  4. Note a backup within 5–10 km of each stop. This single habit removes most of the stress.
  5. Check the weather. Cold weather can reduce usable range by 20–30%; plan an extra stop rather than hoping.

Building the route

Work backwards from the chargers, not forwards from the map. Identify the fast-charging sites along your corridor first, then decide where to stop, then let your navigation app handle the driving. A site with six bays is worth a detour over a site with one, because a single-bay site is a single point of failure.

Payment, not charging, is the cross-border problem. Networks differ by country and not all accept foreign cards or app accounts. Two mitigations: carry a contactless bank card and a roaming RFID card, and prefer operators with a presence in both countries.

How often do you need to stop to charge on an EV road trip?

In practice, roughly every 200 to 300 km on a motorway, for 15 to 25 minutes. That is because the efficient way to drive long distance is between about 10% and 80% state of charge rather than 0% to 100%, which gives a mid-size EV around 250 km of usable range per leg at motorway speed. On a 500 km journey that means one or two stops adding 20 to 45 minutes in total, and on an 800 km journey two or three stops. Cold weather, high speeds and heavy loads all reduce range and typically add one extra stop per 500 km.

Should I charge to 100% on a road trip?

Only the night before you leave. During the journey, charging past about 80% wastes time, because DC charging speed tapers steeply as the battery fills — the last 20% can take as long as the first 60%. The exception is the final leg, if there is no charger near your destination and you need every kilometre. Otherwise, leaving each stop at 80% and driving to the next one is faster overall.

What happens if the charger I planned for is broken or full?

This is the main reason to plan a backup within 5 to 10 km of every planned stop, and to prefer sites with several charge points over single-bay sites. If you arrive and the site is unusable, you normally have enough charge to reach the backup because you planned to arrive at 10 to 15% rather than 2%. Report the fault so the next driver knows, and if you are a long way from an alternative, drop your speed sharply — reducing from 120 to 90 km/h can extend remaining range considerably.

Does cold weather really affect EV range that much?

Yes. In freezing conditions, expect 20 to 30% less range than in mild weather, driven mainly by cabin heating and by reduced battery efficiency at low temperature. Charging is also slower until the pack warms up, which is why preconditioning matters: navigating to a fast charger in the car's own navigation system usually warms the battery on the way and can substantially cut the time you spend plugged in. Plan winter journeys with one extra stop rather than relying on the summer figure.
